HENRY’S RECORD UNDER THREAT FROM GIROUD

The all-time highest goalscorer’s record for the France senior national team currently held by Arsenal legendThierry Henry is under serious pressure from AC Milan star Olivier Giroud after he scored during the 2-0 win over Austria for the French team. The AC Milan striker was the recipient of the second goal as France recorded their first win of the UEFA Nations League this season.

France had been very poor in the Nations League this season until the home game against the Austrians. The world champions didn’t win any of their first four games. They secured their first victory of the season in the competition at the fifth time of asking. France are in Group A1 alongside Austria, Denmark and Croatia. They led in their first group game at home to Denmark only for them to concede twice in the second half and lose 2-1. In their second group game, France played out a 1-1 draw with hosts Croatia. For their third game in Group A1, France also played out a 1-1 draw at the home of Austria. In their fourth group game, Croatia secured an impressive 1-0 away win over France.

After the first four games for each team in Group A1, Denmark led with nine points and two more points thanCroatia in second place. Austria had four points in third place, while France were in fourth spot with two points. The French team were in danger of suffering relegation from League One to League Two on the Nations League scene before the Austria game. The home win over the Austrians has eased those relegation fears.

The win over Austria as revealed earlier was achieved thanks to the goals from KylianMbappe and Olivier Giroud in the second half. AC Milan star Giroud now has 49 goals for France. He’s two goals away from the record.
