They led in their first group game at home to Denmark only for them to concede twice in the second half and lose 2-1. In their second group game, France played out a 1-1 draw with hosts Croatia. For their third game in Group A1, France also played out a 1-1 draw at the home of Austria. In their fourth group game, Croatia secured an impressive 1-0 away win over France.

After the first four games for each team in Group A1, Denmark led with nine points and two more points thanCroatia in second place. Austria had four points in third place, while France were in fourth spot with two points. The French team were in danger of suffering relegation from League One to League Two on the Nations League scene before the Austria game. The home win over the Austrians has eased those relegation fears.
