Bonera praises battling Milan

AC Milan defender Daniele Bonera believes his side can be pleased with the way they battle to victory over Siena at the San Siro on Saturday.

The home side would have been expected to walk away with an easy victory, but the visitors set their stall out to defence and according to 30-year-ild Bonera, the fact Milan were able to grind out a win shows just how determined they are.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “It was a difficult game. Siena defended well, but we managed to show character, and it was much easier after the [first] goal.”

After a goalless first half, Antonio Nocerino opened the scoring just nine minutes after the break when he fired home from the edge of an area after Siena failed to deal with a corner.

Things were made comfortable by Ztatan Ibrahimovic on 64 minutes when he blasted home from the spot after goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic was adjudged to have fouled Kevin-Prince Boateng in the box.

Bonera added that although he feels his best position is centre-back, he was happy to fill in at right-back, the position he played on Saturday, if that’s where he’s needed. People looking at the Champions League odds online will be keeping a close eye on how he copes.

“I consider myself a centre-half, I hope I can be given a chance at that position. However, I am always available to help out wide, if the coach wants me to,” he said.

The win was enough to lift Milan into first place temporarily, until Juventus managed a 2-0 win over Novara which saw them return to the top of Serie A.
