Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina has said that he is unsure regarding his future when his loan contract with Aston Villa concludes in the summer. The shot-stopper joined the Villains on a short-term loan from AC Milan during the winter transfer window after goalkeeper Tom Heaton was ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.
Reina has since made six league appearances for the west Midlands outfit where he has yet to keep a clean sheet. While the Spaniard has stood out with his performances in a couple of games, he has also been susceptible to making mistakes, which have cost the club in the form of goals. As such, it is unclear whether the Premier League club will sign him on a permanent deal this summer and when asked about his future, Reina quipped: “The loan expires on June 30 then I have one more year with Milan. But in football you never know, do you?.”
Heaton was the undisputed choice in goal for the Villains during the first half of the season and he should command a regular starting role following his recovery from the knee problem. Based on this, Reina could be better served pursuing a fresh challenge elsewhere, considering he would be entitled to a similar job with the Rossoneri next term.
The Villains have experienced a tough return to Premier League football this season and they are currently languishing in the 19th spot with a two-point gap to safety. Dean Smith’s side do have a game in hand to recover the deficit but there are question marks whether they can find the goals to keep them in the division.
Wesley has been sidelined for the rest of the season after the knee injury picked up at the turn of the year. John McGinn should return for the final months of the campaign after an ankle fracture but there are no assurances regarding his form. As a result, the club seem mostly dependent on captain Jack Grealish to make things happen in the final third.
